With winter making it’s appearance on several mountain tops in BC this week and many recent engagements I thought it was fitting to share this post.
Where to start. Intro. I’ve known Ian and Veronique for a couple of years now, they’re two of my favourite people to see when I’m in Revelstoke skiing. Jumping back in time, I met them both through my photography work for Revelstoke Mountain Resort. Veronique works in reservations in The Sutton Place Hotel and Ian is the graphic designer for the resort. That being said, I would see them on every trip to shoot in Revelstoke.
Ok, jumping ahead to March 2014. On this particular trip, I was originally booked to shoot the Swatch Freeride World Tour which makes it’s stop in Revelstoke each year. I had drove in from Vancouver, arrived late Friday night exhausted and excited to shoot the next day. Moments after I arrived, got a phone call regarding the Tour which had just been cancelled due to very high avalanche danger. My heart sank. I was SO tired and so choked that it wasn’t just postponed, but cancelled. I called Nicole, broke the news and debated driving home to Kelowna or stay the night and maybe shoot something exciting. I texted Ian asking if it was even worth sticking around to shoot on the hill given that the weather had been really poor and thus the high avalanche rating. He told me that it was pretty mediocre but had a plan. He was going to PROPOSE! My spirits jumped back into game mode and I quickly texted back. “Ya, want photos? 😉 ” The plan was made, I was staying the night in town and the next day was going to be awesome.
Now for the good part. Proposal day. I headed to the hill early and made the hike up the sub-peak to find my hiding perch. I waited patiently for Ian to convince Veronique that she should hike the sub-peak and then it was game time. They hiked the sub-peak and Ian brought her to the perfect spot with a view of the beautiful snow covered valley. I moved to my next hiding spot behind some snow ghosts (aka snow covered trees) and by now he was down on one knee. They were too far away for me to hear anything he was saying but when she saw the ring the only thing I heard was her burst with excitement followed by her gasp as she had just realized I was shooting the whole proposal. They proceeded to enjoy the moments atop the ski hill with a few photos together and a celebratory sip of champagne. After sharing in the excitement with them and with smiles beaming on their faces, we made the leg burning decent from mountain top to valley bottom.
I now present to you, Ian and Veronique’s proposal story!
September 7th, 2014. Veronique and Ian tied the knot in Revelstoke and I was honoured to photograph their big day. These two are SO perfect for each other and Nicole and I are so lucky to have them as friends! Stay tuned for their wedding blog post!
